You say that Christmas has become too commercialized. In some towns the display of decorated trees is now controversial. Confused about whether to say "Merry Christmas" or "Happy Holidays". What about Kwanza, Hanukkah, and the Holy Days of Islam? Maybe a simple greeting of "Peace to you brother" would be appropriate. Better be careful though with that one. I have a few friends who have been arrested for saying "Peace" at the wrong time in the wrong place. Ah, the stress of it all could drive a person to over- indulge in the spiked nog. (...) -

It is now time to look back and remember- well not exactly. That's what we have been doing for what seems like forever. We are a nation that is stuck in grief and frightened of the future. GWB has used the words "nine eleven" more times than he has said, "Laura, where's the remote".

Now it is time for a reality check so we can finally end the denial. 9/11 was the result of blowback. They did it to us because of what we had been doing to them for decades. Sooner or later every school yard bully gets pay back. Serious and tragic as 9/11 was, the number of deaths does not even compare with the deaths that have resulted from U.S. interventions. (...)

On August 19, 1953 the government of the United States executed a coup d'etat in Iran. What was it that angered U.S. policy makers? Why was the CIA sent in to overthrow the Democratic government of Iran? The answer---Dr. Mohammed Mossadegh, the duly elected prime minister, had the intention of nationalizing the oil fields so that the people of Iran would benefit. That single fact was enough to bring about the CIA invasion. Even back then, the official U.S. policy was that the oil under Iran's sands was the property of U.S. corporations. The U.S. coup in Iran was so successful that soon after it, in 1954, the CIA was sent on a similar mission to Guatemala. No, Guatemala did not have oil but it had something else that a U.S. corporation was coveting. The United Fruit company wanted the soil upon which bananas were growing. How dare the people in Guatemala think that they owned the land in their country. The CIA accomplished its mission in Guatemala, and another Democracy was obliterated. (...) -

I am happy that he was not injured but his personal problems are none of my business. Voyeurism is not my thing. I don't care about Laura Bush's traffic accident either. I don't care about Cheney's daughter's sex life. I don't care about Michael Jackson, or Madonna, or the private life of any celebrity. I don't care about much that is on TV. Justice in the Green Mountains

Nothing lasts forever...unless you try to gain justice in a Vermont Court. On June 5, 2006 the 7th year of a legal battle will begin. This is not a complex case. In fact, this case is about as simple as any legal case could be. The joke about lawyers making mountains out of molehills needs to be revised. In this case, entire mountain ranges have been created out of one tiny speck. I do not mean to imply that all lawyers are crooks. Not all are. It looks like the Press has found another scapegoat. Must be that the Ward Churchill bashing was no longer pulling in the high ratings so now begins the Bashing of Bennish. Jay Bennish is a high school geography teacher at Overland High School in Aurora, Colorado.

Recently one of his students taped some of Bennish's comments during a class. I am not offended that a student would take that action, either on his own or under the direction of someone with less than pure motives. All classrooms should be open to public scrutiny at all times. (...)

Right now I am watching your interview on C-Span Book TV. Thank you for the book, which covers many important topics.

Women Who Make the World Worse contains some valid arguments. There is much in your book that is irrefutable; but during the interview you made a serious mistake. At one point you said that a single mother should look for a father for her children. That statement is evidence of your lack of understanding of the root causes of childhood poverty, a leading social problem of our time. It feeds into the myth that these children have no fathers. I need to remind you that there have not been any Immaculate Conceptions in recent years. There is no bright star shining in the East. (...)

The New Liberation Movement

The history of the women's movement reflected the culture and values of the upwardly mobile female.

The recent death of Betty Friedan has once again put the spotlight on the Feminist Movement. There is no question that during much of history, women have been devalued. There is also no question that Friedan and other leaders of the women's movement are owed a debt of gratitude for their efforts.

But there is another side to this story that is too often dismissed as just unintended consequences. The movement did not always free women and give them more choices. Often, women were forced out of the home to work at jobs even more mundane than the ones they left behind. There was not much liberation afforded to the women who were forced to become bean counters for corporations. Many women were transformed from homemakers into widget makers. Leaving the frying pan behind only to be pushed into the fire was how many viewed the liberation movement. (...)

A Small Matter of Justice

There are some good reasons why every U.S. citizen should be thinking about reparations. The payment of reparations to every victim of U.S. foreign and domestic policy would have a dramatic effect on the course of history; but also there are other, often overlooked, advantages that would come from just having a great national debate about reparations. The debate itself would have long lasting rewards. A national conversation about reparations would be the one thing that could awaken and inform the sleeping citizens. This is a nation in which factual information is difficult to come by. School textbooks rarely give an accurate view of history. The combination of a misguided government owned and operated educational system and an incompetent corporate owned mass media has resulted in a misinformed, sleeping populace. (...) -
