HOW HAIR LOSS OCCURS AND THE CONTRIBUTION BY STEROIDS
Steroids are complex compounds in the human body that are generated from cholesterol to form hormones that are used in the daily functioning of the body. The anabolic and androgenic steroid testosterone is an example. Testosterone and its available supplements are widely in use for body building, body fitness, muscle gain and strength and perseverance.
Alopecia, hair loss, in men is genetically pre determined. This means that only the men with a genetic predisposition for hair loss suffer from it. This is only true for male pattern hair loss. Male pattern hair loss usually starts as men age but may start earlier. It follows the pattern of a receding hairline with thinning at the crown and temples leaving a horse shoe patch of hair on the head.
The male pattern baldness is caused by the hormone dihydrotestosterone which is the precursor of testosterone. The dihydrotestosterone binds to hair follicles and the ones not able to withstand the inflammation that takes place fall off leading to alopecia. However, this is only possible with hair follicles that are genetically predisposed to male pattern hair loss. In short, there are hair follicles that are overly sensitive to testosterone due to their genetic makeup.
The hair loss from steroids results from the increased concentration of dihydrotestosterone in the system. The high amounts speed up the process of hair loss. This is because hair follicles are exposed to very high levels of the steroid and they most always are not able to withstand the inflammation that ensues and as a result the hair falls off.
Hair loss is mostly an emotional and aesthetic problem for most men. With many men desiring and donning a full head of hair, the few with alopecia have a hard time living with it and most are in the search for solutions. There are two drugs available for the treatment of male pattern baldness but they only work as long as the drug is in continued use. They include finasteride and minoxidil.
For the few who are able to afford it, hair transplant surgery is more permanent and has better results.
