A poem dedicated to all Conscientious Objectors

Saturday November 5th, 2005, by Rosemarie Jackowski

When the recruiter calls, you don’t have to go

Instead have your name counted with Gandhi and Thoreau

Examine your conscience, look deep in your soul

Don’t wait ’till you’re in that bloody foxhole

What will you do when you’re given the order

To shoot at that shadow on the dim desert border

A precious life that you with your gun would end

Do you really want to kill someone’s grandfather or friend

Collateral damage---that’s the Pentagon’s name

For killing civilians in this evil war game

"Be all that you can be" is the slogan they use

Better read the fine print, it might be a ruse

When they say it again, "Be all you can be"

Remind them of My Lai and No Gun Ri

Tell the recruiter to join you now that you know

That every enlistee should be a C.O.
